Things to Consider as Personal Goals
Now that we have considered setting family goals (family), let’s get ready to set your personal goals for this new year looming. List desired results: I want to lose 42 pounds. I want to drive a clean car with no fast food cups or wrappers floating around loose. Developing a smaller but more cohesive wardrobe for work would make mornings easier. I want a large enough savings account that I don’t worry about paying for emergencies, like blowing the car engine or a family member becoming ill.
List the things that keep you awake at night, like paying off the credit card. Also list all the things you’ve always wanted to accomplish but haven’t had a chance to try. For example, have you always wanted to travel? Or maybe you want to learn a new skill — sewing, perhaps, or French cooking.
What about other desires? Have you always wanted to write a book? Want to start your own business? Write it down, everything you would like to accomplish in that nebulous “some day” we all push these things off toward. The idea is to make at least some of our dreams happen by making this day the day you start moving forward.
Sort by Time Required to Accomplish Each Goal
Now sort your list by the length of time you believe it will take to accomplish each item. Some may actually be things to do immediately. That’s okay. Just write them down on your daily to-do list.
Some will be things you can accomplish in three months or less. List these as ninety day goals.
You may be able to get results on other things within six months to a year. Let’s call these yearly goals.
Other things will be an ongoing effort, more than a year certainly and maybe a forever thing. These will probably be things that you want to make a habit out of, so label them accordingly.
You should now have four lists: your to-do list additions, your ninety day goals, your six to twelve month goals, and new habits to form.
List by Importance
Take each of the last three lists and put them in order according to how much you want to get them done. Next, put the most important goals at the top of the lists, then list the next most important and so on until it is all done.
Now make a new list of the top goals in each category. Look them over and choose the one you most want or need to accomplish first. Then place them all in order according to their importance in your mind.
Choose the Goals You Have the Ability to Work On
This next step is probably the hardest to take. You need to decide how many of your goals you can work on at once. What do you base this decision on? Well, you: your life, your time constraints, your energy level, your prior commitments, and how easy it is for you to focus on one or more subjects. Only you can know yourself well enough to make this decision. Be sure to choose only the goals you really, really want to commit to accomplishing.
So now you know which goals you want to pursue. These should be large, carefully chosen, and ambitious goals. If you are spiritually inclined, I would encourage you to pray about these things as you work.
Break Personal Goals into Small Steps
The next step is to write each goal at the top of a sheet of paper. Underneath the heading, start listing steps you can take to start accomplishing that goal. Break the actions down to fairly quick-to-do steps. Try to keep them more or less in the order that they’ll need to be performed. If need be, you can go back through and reorder them when you’re done, of course.
Set Your Commitment
After you have all this done, we’ll talk next about how to get these things on your calendar so they actually get done. It involves that word ‘commitment’!
